Current treatments for HIV and AIDS—ART and HAART (Antiretroviral Therapy and Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy) are drug combinations that are expensive, difficult to access in many areas of the world, and accompanied by a number of complications, including moderate to severe side effects, onerous dosing regimens, multiple drug interactions, and the development of drug resistant strains of the HIV virus. The development of immune-based therapies with simple dosing regimens and minimal side-effects would be an important addition to the treatment arsenal for HIV.

VGV-1 was originally discovered during the course of studying TNP as a means of detecting HIV infection. When suspended in adjuvant, we found TNP to be capable of more than just HIV detection and it may serve as a potential treatment for HIV/ AIDS.
